The Importance of Hydration: Why Lip Care Won't Work Without It

We've all heard the saying "drink more water" a million times, but do we really understand how important it is? Drinking enough water is not only essential for overall health, but it's also crucial for achieving and maintaining healthy skin, including our lips.

Dehydration can lead to a multitude of skin problems, including flakiness, dryness, and even premature aging. When it comes to our lips, dehydration can cause them to become dry, cracked, and uncomfortable. No matter how much lip balm or lip mask you apply, if you're not hydrated from the inside out, your lips will continue to suffer.

But how much water do we actually need? It is recommended that men should aim for about 3.7 liters (125 ounces) of water per day, while women should aim for 2.7 liters (91 ounces) per day. However, these are just general guidelines, and your individual needs may vary based on factors such as age, activity level, and climate.

It's also important to note that not all liquids are created equal when it comes to hydration. While coffee, tea, and soda may contain water, they can actually have a diuretic effect, causing us to lose more water than we take in. Alcohol is also a dehydrator, so it's important to drink water along with any alcoholic beverages. As I age, I find that the last statement also helps with hangovers lol.

The benefits of staying hydrated go beyond just skin health. Drinking enough water can improve cognitive function, boost energy levels, and even aid in weight loss. And yet, a shocking 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. It's no wonder that so many people struggle with dry lips.

So how can we make sure we're getting enough water to keep our lips and skin healthy? Here are a few tips:

  1. 1. Carry a water bottle with you wherever you go, and make it a habit to sip on it throughout the day. Those fun water bottles with lines to tell you how much to drink and when are helpful.

  2. 2. Set reminders on your phone to take water breaks. Chug chug chug when that alarm goes off!

  3. 3. Eat foods that are high in water content, such as watermelon, cucumbers, and celery. I like to eat these cold, especially during the summer months.

  4. 4. Invest in a good water filtration system to make sure you're drinking clean, healthy water. I personally use the Berkey system and love it!

  5. 5. Make drinking water fun by infusing it with fruits or herbs. Cucumber water is by far my favorite. Mint is another good one to try!

Remember, when it comes to achieving healthy skin, hydration is so important. No matter how many lip care products you use, if you're not hydrated, your lips will continue to suffer. So drink up and cheers to healthy, happy, and hydrated lips!
